A neuroscientist has told of a dramatic near-death experience he says occurred after he suffered severe internal bleeding.
Álex Gómez Marín, a doctor in theoretical physics, described the seven-second episode in which he found himself bathed in an otherworldly golden light.
“It happened in seven seconds,” he recalled. “I'm in a tunnel, which is really a well. In other words, I am looking up and above.

“There are three figures waiting. They are standing against a light. I see them, I see the silhouettes, and I know who each of them are. I have no doubt.
“The light is yellow and very strong,” Dr Marín added. “I know at that moment… and that is very important — it’s not that I think or I believe, it’s that I know. I am certain that I am being received and that if I accept their help, I'm going to die.”

Recalling his experience on Spanish programme La Rosa de los Vientos, Dr Marín said he felt as though he was communicating telepathically with the three mysterious figures. “I don't talk to them. I feel and know what they are proposing and what I am feeling.”
When the trio gave him the option of either returning to his body or passing away, Dr Marín said he made his choice: “I thank them and tell them not yet. I decide to return, and at that moment I am calm.
“I am not happy,” he added, “but I am very calm in that well. I know what's going to happen, and I just thank them and return. This is my near-death experience.”

Dr Marín, who holds a PhD in theoretical physics and a Master’s in biophysics from the University of Barcelona, said the strange encounter was not like a dream or hallucination, but rather something “more real than reality itself.”
“I was on the other side for seven seconds. I was in a well with a golden light above and three spiritual guides offering me help to get out. At that moment, I decided to go back. I thought about my little girls and asked to come back,” he recalled.
He explained that, despite the intensity of the experience, he felt neither fear nor pain, but instead a profound serenity and complete understanding of his surroundings. “There was no need to think — I just knew. I knew everything was OK.”
The episode occurred a few years ago when Dr Marín suffered internal bleeding that left him hospitalised for several days. In the midst of this critical situation, his body went into clinical arrest and his heart stopped beating for seven seconds. It was at that moment, according to his account, that he experienced a sensation beyond all scientific logic.
He added that the experience profoundly transformed his understanding of consciousness and the meaning of human existence.
